Project: Science of Clay & Underglaze Surface Techniques Students took visual notes while learning some of the science behind how and why clay particles bond, break, dry, harden, are fired, and glazed. This lesson is intended to deepen student understanding of 3D clay sculpture while also giving them the insights to prevent problems, problem-solve in the moment, and achieve great technique in clay work. They are also practicing under-glazing techniques including sgraffito.
Project: Unity-Variety Animal Masks - Multi-Media Sculpture Students used a variety of recyclable materials to create unified animal masks. After brainstorming and sketching, students explored a variety of 3D construction techniques to build their mask sculptures. As a culminating experience, we held a group photo shoot in the art room, posing and pantomiming in a dinner scene to show off our masks. Check out some examples of these below.
Project: Radial Balance - Printmaking Project Students studied the Principle of Balance, specifically Radial Balance in this project. Using a graphite transferring technique, students made symmetrical copies of a name design and then engraved these designs into styrofoam printing plates. After learning a little about the history of printmaking, students made many copies of their designs. Once arranged in a radially symmetrical order, new patterns, shapes, and a strong sense of balance appears in these radial name prints. Check out some of the finished work below.
Project: Pattern in Drawings Students are applying their knowledge of the Elements of Art to develop a set of interesting and complex patterns, sometimes known as Zentangles. By letting themselves improvise a variety of patterns, lines, and values, students will be able to enjoy the relaxing quality of Zentangles, often used in art therapy, meditative practices, and in a variety of art styles. Check out some of the finished projects below.
Project: Ceramic Vessels - Empty Bowls Project One important role of the artist is to use art to bring people together, to raise awareness of communal issues, and to support the community in which they live. This spring, we hosted an Empty Bowls Ceremony -- an international event intended to raise awareness of local hunger issues. During this event, local artists (our students) make and donate a collection of ceramic bowls for an art show. All proceeds were then donated to the local SOMMA Food Bank. This year's Empty Bowls Ceremony took place during the Band Concert in the OHS Cafeteria and Gymnasium on Thursday, March 8th.Check out some of the photos of the Empty Bowls Event below!
